I analysed
two different types of magazines and they were both different. One magazine was
called ‘Vibe’, and the other was called ‘Fashion’. Vibe is a music and
entertainment magazine which predominantly features R&B and hip hop music artists.
Fashion is a magazine which covers international, national and local fashion,
beauty trends and news.
Vibe
Quincy Jones launched Vibe in 1993, in partnership
with Time Inc. Originally, the publication had been called Volume before co-founding editor,
Scott Poulson-Bryant gave it the name Vibe.
The Wicks Group bought the magazine in 2006. On June 30th, 2009, it
was announced that vibe was shutting its doors and ceasing publication online
immediately, although according to Essence, Quincy Jones has stated he would
like to keep it alive online. After shutting down, private equity investment fund Intermedia Partners, LP
bought Vibe Magazine. They have said they "feel privileged to purchase and
resurrect such a storied brand”. The magazine was founded 1993 and was base in
New York City, US. The magazine publicized its last edition in 2014, this was
print based. Over a 21 year period, the magazine had several editors, such as
Editor-in-Chief Jermaine Hall, Mimi Valdes, Emil Wilbekin, Alan Light and
Jonathan Van Meter. The magazine owed
its success to featuring a broader range of interests than its closest
competitors The Source and XXL which focus more narrowly on rap music or the
rock and pop-centric Rolling Stone and Spin. As of June 30, 2012, Vibe has a
circulation of 300,943 , of which 202,439 was paid, and 98,504 was non-paid.
Advertisers ran the gamut from record labels to fashion houses to various
cognac brands. Vibe made a consistent effort to feature
models of all ethnicities in these pages. Former editor Emil Wilbikin was
frequently credited with styling those pages and keeping fashion in the
forefront of the magazine's identity during the early 2000s.
Fashion
Fashion is a
Canadian fashion magazine published by St. Joseph Media. Established in 1977,
it is currently based in Toronto (with satellite offices in Vancouver, Calgary
and Montreal), publishes 10 issues a year and has a total readership of 1.85
million.
The magazine
is based in Toronto, Canada and the first issue was released in 1977. The
magazine covers international, national and local fashion and beauty trends and
news. It aims to reach affluent, style-conscious urban women.
The current editor-in-chief is Bernadette Morra. Previous
to joining Fashion, Morra spent
23 years at the Toronto Star, first as fashion writer, then (since 1993) as
fashion editor. She left the Star in 2008 to be a freelance writer and
launch a website for jewelry lovers. Bernadette has reported from the runways
of Milan, London, Paris and New York, and interviewed many top fashion
designers, models and celebrities including Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs,
Nicholas Ghesquiere, Victoria Beckham and Linda Evangelista.
In 2009, FASHION launched its men's magazine Men’s
Fashion as a bi-annual special interest publication. In 2012, they added a
Holiday issue, in addition to the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter editions. The
current editor-in-chief is Canadian journalist David Livingstone.
ok, so decide which one would best suit your publication and visa versa.... what was that decision based on/ was it the company values, distribution reach? or do you feel that your publication fits with the brand image and existing portfolio?
